Lore
Eight eyes gleam like wet onyx in the darkness, before the creature lowers itself silently from above, revealing the pale, elegant torso of a dark fey woman fused grotesquely to the bloated body of a spider.
These cursed beings, known as Spider Fey, are born from a divine metamorphosis inflicted by an evil goddess upon her most treacherous or beloved servants. The upper half retains the features of a Changeling, often regal in bearing but warped with fangs and inhuman protrusions. The lower spider-body is covered in matte chitin, which allows it to glide soundlessly across ceilings or up sheer walls. Their attacks combine piercing glaives and venomous barbs with shadow maleficence, while their webbing can choke corridors in glistening strands of sticky spidersilk. Capricious and intelligent, these creatures take a cruel delight in capturing their enemies and eviscerating them alive. In the subterranean depths of their dark societies, they serve as priestesses, assassins, or wardens of fey-blighted strongholds where the light cannot reach.
Spider Fey are calculating enemies that act as battlefield controllers, using stealth to isolate enemies and the environment to bewilder the party in its approach. Their supernatural grace and ability to blend with the shadows makes them difficult to restrain, and they prefer to use traps (such as the specially reinforced spidersilk webs they weave) to ensnare victims so they can later use them as playthings for crossbreeding or torture. While Spider Fey generally behave as sadistic tormentors, they can be reasoned with, and are often as intrigued by individual human striving as they are disdainful of humankind as a whole. Resist the temptation to run them as unthinking perils—instead, lean into their warped sense of curiosity and prurient interest.
