Lore

Inside the cavern of glassed sand and bone stands a massive creature: half-man, half-scorpion, its humanoid face etched with chitinous ridges, its digitigrade legs braced to lunge. You freeze. A stinger the size of your head dangles from its uncoiled tail, dripping with acidic venom…

The upper body of the Infernal Centaur resembles a scarred human warrior with four powerful arms wielding rusted armaments, but from the waist down, the creature is entirely arachnid, with a jagged carapace that blends seamlessly in the dunes when it burrows. These monstrosities are perversions of Centaur-kind, the result of dark magic or an ancient curse that evolved through the ages. Infernal Centaurs strike first with their venomous stinger to skewer victims, or shoot projectile spines from their insectoid bodies to soften prey before closing in on them with rending claws or edged weapons. They live in labyrinthine subterranean cults, where they worship elder gods in warrens devoted to the pleasure of torment. As collectors of agony, Infernal Centaurs feed their victims to their buried egg-clutches, or preserve them in pits to be devoured later by newly hatched young.

Infernal Centaurs are cruel tacticians who lure victims deep into their territory, first by stalking them from afar with ranged attacks and then by ambushing them from beneath the sands. Depict their warrens as nightmarish dens of ritual sacrifice, filled with half-buried slaves, wriggling spawn, and demonic iconography. The monsters nest in hot desert environments and abhor cold, perhaps a trait inherited from their demonic ancestry. Their mentality is brutal and haughty, and while they are not particularly intelligent, they derive pleasure from inflicting violence on their foes. Infernal Centaur venom can be both a tactical threat and a story hook, especially if the poison has lingering effects or requires a cure involving the eggs they lay.
