Lore

Bubasti are equal parts mischief and grace.

These tall, slender humanoids have quick reflexes, instinctual cunning, and a keen sense of hearing. They wear minimal clothing because their sleek fur coats, which vary from rosetted jungle patterns to solid monochrome colors, protect them from the elements. Like dire cats, Bubasti are natural hunters that can see in the dark, and so they apply these survival instincts to all aspects of life, from actual hunting to trade with other humanoids. Most clowders of Bubasti form reclusive societies that are suspicious of outsiders—monastic clades worship obscure nature gods in the deep jungle, for example—but more social colonies prefer densely populated metropolitan regions where they adopt local customs. When pressed to violence, Bubasti fight with light weapons or unarmed. As a people, they are curious and reticent, always interested in strange lands, shiny treasure, and unfamiliar faces.

Bubasti are agile skirmishers who dart in and out of combat, relying on stealth maneuvers and advantageous terrain to outsmart their foes. They are driven by novelty and wanderlust, so in play they may engage adventurers as guides, rivals, or tricksters with loyalty as fairweather as they are fleet of foot. GMs can highlight their natural aptitudes by emphasizing their mobility and willingness to fight dirty: give them great heights to leap from, places to vanish into, and party weakness to exploit. Remember, it’s not by chance that Bubasti are lucky; they never go into a situation without knowing every escape route or vantage point to leverage.
