Lore
The ground splits as a glossy carapace heaves upward: a living warmachine rises from the muck. Its shell glints black and mandibles clack with the promise of ruin.
The scuttle of a Dire Beetle shakes the earth with its mighty presence. Its shell is thick like armored plate and it carries natural armaments: a six-foot long goring horn and mandibles strong enough to snap steel in half. Some varieties bombard prey with explosive gouts of caustic fluid while others blind whole parties with flashes of light. All Dire Beetles, however, have supernatural strength, which they use to move objects many times their own size. While most Dire Beetles are simpleminded insects with an indiscriminate diet, a few exhibit eerie collective cunning, coordinating raids and even hoarding baubles from their victims. Such monstrosities can be found in any landscape: swarming forests, filling deep mines, grazing in cold wastes, or skittering in the crevices of even more colossal monsters.
In play, Dire Beetles are durable, frontline combatants, capable of battering through armor and facing off against many opponents at once. They are usually motivated by hunger and territorial instinct. Use tags to create more complex varieties with area of effect abilities. Tactical players will realize that Dire Beetles have poor eyesight and can be evaded as long as they keep their distance. Pair the creatures with smarter, subterranean allies such as packs of roving ghouls or humanoids who may use them as war mounts. The reward for victory is often more than mere survival: the Dire Beetle’s luminous glands, caustic bodily fluids, and guts serve as coveted alchemical reagents, ensuring they remain as valuable dead as they are terrifying alive.
