- Repairs Itself +13 (Dying):
When the monster becomes dormant, it cannot move or act, but any passive abilities it has continue to function (even if the monster is unconscious or on death's door). The monster's ability to continue to function in this way can be disrupted according to the monster's description, or the GM's discretion.
Lore
The ziggurat shakes as you ascend its steps. You fear you have arrived too late. There it sits, an immense stone idol on a golden throne, its foot the size of the elephant that carried you into this jungle.
Avatars are vessels constructed to house divine power, the momentary incarnation of a god’s will. Worshippers sculpt such gargantuan golems out of variously rare materials, such as netherworld-dipped iron blackened by maleficent flame, the smelted ore of bloodied armaments, or patchworks of monstrous hides stitched together from slain hordes. These towering, 100-foot tall constructs march relentlessly and clumsily toward their targets, causing massive siege damage to their surroundings. The thaumaturgic energy imbued into the Avatar through sacred rituals encodes within it a singular purpose: devastate, guard, or pursue.
Facing an Avatar is like trying to avert a natural disaster–the encounter-sized constructs embody the very concept of the Juggernaut Stance, as they create a path of destruction once they’re awakened and set into motion. They’re best deployed as set-piece encounters meant to push adventurers to their limits, or as the focus of a deadly chase scene. GMs are encouraged to treat the Avatar’s stats as a template for creating a construct more tailored to the narrative goals of the encounter: mix in the abilities of any Wild or Cryptid monster and combine the total levels of both entries to create a truly formidable monster. In combat, Avatars level the playing field (quite literally) with superheated eye-beams after bursting onto the scene with their terrifying presence. Worst of all, Avatars are virtually indestructible, for when they’re brought to 0 HP or below, they enter a state of regenerative dormancy, shutting down all functions until enough internal repair has been completed that they can continue their divine mission. Resourceful players will need to uncover its vulnerability—be it a relic, counter-ritual, or symbolic act tied to its core concept, that can permanently defeat it while it lies dormant.
