Lore

A massive shadow blackens the silvery sky of the Astral Veil. You see a giant sphere of stars form in the dark: an iridescent eye opening, spiralling like a vortex of energy in the void.

The Astral Juggernaut resembles a whale-like draconic insect, hundreds of meters long, its carapace plated with mountainous ridges, crablike pincers, and a fat tail wide enough to be mistaken for an adrift island. Its single, ship-sized eye burns with antimagic that it emits in a cone anywhere it looks—creating a blankness in reality itself. The creature is drawn to the presence of psychical intrusions into the Veil, such as the astral projections of travelers from the material realm, and ignores native lifeforms as harmless fixtures of its environment. Astral Juggernauts are few in number; solitary, immortal creatures that have roamed the cosmos since the dawn of time. Some believe that within their gullets are extradimensional prisons, where various debris and lost treasure, hunks of astral realms, and even whole societies persist, still striving in its stomach after having been ravaged by its passing. The Juggernaut is driven only by a hunger for the foreign energies of its prey, but does not speak, rest, or multiply. It simply is, like a force of nature.

The Astral Juggernaut is better treated as an environmental hazard than an antagonist, ideal for derailing hubristic adventurers who wander astray in the Astral Veil. Its motivations are animalistic, and it only expresses malice insofar as its aggression steers it toward devouring intruders. GMs should lean into its antimagic cone to nullify spellcasters, forcing the party to split their positioning or adopt alternative tactics. A smart party may realize that fighting the creature head-on is a bad idea, given its tremendous resilience and devastating area of effect attacks. You can design an adventure around one or more PCs being swallowed by the Juggernaut and trapped in its extradimensional interior, where they may encounter isolated NPCs, long-lost secrets, or MacGuffins important to their journey. Though its carapace is impervious to mundane harm, the creature’s unarmored eye is not. Use the Juggernaut to evoke cosmic dread, to remind players that not everything in the universe was meant to be fought… and that when you stare into the void too long, it stares back.
