Lore
Tyger Tyger, burning bright; In the forests of the night; What immortal hand or eye; Could frame thy fearful symmetry? (The Tyger, William Blake)
Dire Cats are horse-sized predators, lithe but corded with muscle, with fangs the length of daggers. Such creatures possess a cold but playful intelligence that operates best in stealth to outmaneuver its prey. Dire Cats are primarily driven by instinct and prefer the solitary hunt in wild places, picking off stragglers in herds and catching lone wanderers unaware. For the Dire Cat, silence is its armor as much as its fast reflexes.
Dire Cats are ambusher predators whose speed and strength make for tense encounters. They prefer to engage their enemies on their own terms, rarely attacking in the open; instead, they aim to immobilize or weaken superior foes—using their bite to grapple and entangle, before pulling victims into the underbrush. Their immense leaping power allows them to close distance with terrifying celerity. Always frame the PCs as prey when setting up an encounter with a Dire Cat: signal its presence with rustling reeds, the snap of a branch, or a low growl coming from behind. The knowledge that it can strike from anywhere, at any moment, is a weapon more powerful than any of its physical attacks.
