Lore

You see a monstrous shadow plummet silently from the clouds—wings as wide as a ship’s sails, great talons gleaming, and eyes yellow as the sun.

Dire Birds are aerial predators that come in many varieties, from the thunderbird that circles mountain crags majestically, to the serpentine astral erne whose wings scintillate with magic. Some are hideous arcane hybrids—such as the feral bloodhawk that thirsts for life essence, or the noxious death buzzard that feeds on undead flesh. The plumage of a Dire Bird may be glossy, hard as steel, or tattered and necrotic, exuding an aura of rot, ozone, or fresh starlight. Such monstrous avians act on instinct to protect their nests or hunt prey for survival, but more intelligent breeds employ sophisticated tactics in combat or may even be capable of primitive speech. While most rend prey with beaks and claws, others possess strange powers, like maleficent breath or a mind-splintering screech. Their eggs are valued by traders as delicacies and to hatch as flying mounts, but like their flightless counterparts, the creatures are notoriously difficult to domesticate.

Dire Birds use hit-and-fly tactics against grounded foes and engage in high-speed assaults that scatter parties and force vertical thinking. When their lair is threatened, they pursue prey with relentless focus, often returning again and again to snatch stragglers or harass with vicious swoops from above. As Wild creatures, Dire Birds have keen hearing and eyesight that prevents them from being surprised, they can see in the dark, and as flying opponents are immune to attacks of opportunity. GMs should leverage the terrain against adventuring parties involving such creatures—precarious cliffs, brittle ruins, and stormclouds that provide cover are always to their advantage in combat.
