Lore

Two red eyes illuminate the dark: you hear the growl of a beast that thinks as a man does, but hunts with a wolf’s body. Now you are prey.

Barghests are a fiendish breed of Orc that appear as enormous wolves with coarse black or blue-tinged fur. Their eyes burn like coals and voices rasp with eerie intelligence. Barghests are able to shift seamlessly into goblin-like forms, and they hunt together in packs primarily under the cover of darkness. As corpse-eaters, the creatures consume the dead to swell their own strength and twist into greater, more monstrous forms as their appetite becomes sated. These creatures, being a part of the accursed evil race of the Orc, answer only to masters more powerful than them, serving as dread mounts in an ever-widening quest to dominate the earth and strip it of all life.

Barghests are cunning ambushers that like to whittle down their enemies’ numbers through hit-and-run attacks. They rarely fight fair—Barghests are patient, and will stalk prey for days before springing upon them when they’re most vulnerable. Foes who underestimate goblins may come across a band of the little devils only to end up surrounded by a pack of Barghests; the beasts use tactics like these, along with their limited spellcasting ability, to divide and conquer. A Barghest that devours a victim grows larger and stronger. Use their rotting breath to hobble the party before disarming them with claw attacks or pinning them defenseless with powerful jaws. Like goblins, however, Barghests are vulnerable to light, and their packs will scatter if confronted with a sudden conflagration or source of divine energy.
